How to replenish the cutting line on a bump head cordless grass trimmer

Grass trimmer line breaks off while you’re working. It’s a minor inconvenience in an otherwise satisfactory way to cut down long grass and weeds on verges, slopes and lawn edges. Here’s how grass trimmer technology keeps you working without distraction.

How to replenish the cutting line on a bump head cordless grass trimmer

There are 3 types of cordless grass trimmer head on the market, which feed or replenish the trimmer line differently:

  • Bump feed
  • Automatic feed
  • Fixed head (or fixed line)

EGO’s line trimmers all have a bump line feed head, which is the easiest technology for replenishing your line during operation. Even grass trimmers with our Powerload™ technology have a bump head.

What is a bump feed head?

This is a large feed head that is designed to release more line when it’s gently ‘bumped’ against a hard surface like hard-packed soil. It’s spring loaded and, when touched, releases line from the spool.

The quick ‘bump’ releases a short amount of line to keep you working; holding the bump head down will continue to release line (not a good idea). It’s a good system if you remember to ‘bump’ every so often to keep the line replenished.

What is a Powerload™ head?

Solving one of the biggest frustrations of cordless grass trimmer line replacement (when the spool runs out completely), our groundbreaking Powerload™ technology automatically loads the line into the trimmer head.

Just thread the line, press the button and Powerload™ does the rest. It’s available on selected grass trimmer models that also have bump heads for regular line replenishment while working.

Rapid Reload™ is another speedy way to replace an empty spool with line.

Tips for adjusting your cutting line length using a bump head

The trimmer head allows you to release more cutting line without stopping the motor. As line becomes frayed or worn, additional line can be released by lightly tapping the bump knob on the ground while operating the trimmer.

  • Line release will become more difficult if the cutting line becomes too short.
  • Don’t remove or alter the line-cutting blade assembly.
  • Excessive line length will cause the motor to overheat and may result in serious personal injury.

If the cutting line is not released when the trimmer head is tapped

Occasionally, the cutting line breaks from the line outlet or the cutting line is not released when the trimmer head is tapped. Or, you might have worn the cutting line down too far. If this happens, follow the steps below.

  • Press the release tabs on the upper cover and remove the lower cover assembly by pulling it straight out.
  • Remove the cutting line from the spool.
  • With one hand holding the lower cover assembly, use the other hand to grasp the lower cover assembly and align the tabs on the upper cover with the holes in the lower cover assembly. Use your palm to press the lower cover assembly until the tabs lock with the upper cover.
  • Follow the instructions below to reload the cutting line.

How to reload the cordless grass trimmer line

  • Remove the power plug from the grass trimmer.
  • Remove the remaining cutting line, if necessary.
  • Cut 8m long cutting line, insert the line into the mounting hole inside the eyelet. Push and pull the line from the other side until equal amounts of line appear on both sides of the spool.
  • Press, while rotating the lower cover assembly in the arrow direction, to wind the line onto the spool until approximately 14cm of line is showing on each side.
  • Push the lower cover assembly down while pulling on the lines to manually advance the line and to check for proper assembly of the grass trimmer head.
