5 ways to use your bristle brush for autumn lawn care
1. Prevent fungal diseases
Autumnal fungal diseases such as Fusarium patch (or snow mould) and brown patch fungus can quickly take hold and damage your lawn. They can cause dead and dying grass areas along with other symptoms like white or pink growth on your lawn.
The morning dew in autumn provides the perfect conditions for fungal diseases to thrive. However, you can prevent them from taking hold by brushing away the morning dew with your bristle brush.
How to brush dew from your lawn
To brush away dew from your lawn, start in the middle and work towards the edges of your lawn in each direction. Make sure you’re brushing in a forward motion each time, not forward and backward. Also, make sure you’re always standing in the area you’ve just brushed. This ensures you’re not treading or brushing the moisture back onto the dry lawn areas.
2. Get a cleaner cut
Your bristle brush can also help you get a cleaner mow . This is especially true if the grass has become too long and the blades have started to flop over, or if the grass has become compacted somehow.
By brushing the lawn before your autumnal mow, the grass becomes more upright and less compacted, which means the mower blades can cut it more effectively. There’s no right time to do this, but make sure it’s just before you mow, which should be on a dry day.
3. Break up lawn clippings
The turf can have some moisture even if it’s a dry day. This means that when you come to mow it, you’re left with clumps of lawn clippings. These clumps can encourage lawn diseases to spread as their moist and insulated conditions are ideal for fungus and bacteria. They’re also unsightly and take time to disappear.
However, you can break these clumps up using a bristle brush and prevent the risks and results that come with them. Simply brush through your lawn after mowing and repeat if you find areas of grass clippings clumped together. Ideally, do this on a dry day when the grass has dried out and will break up easier.
4. Brush in lawn dressings
A bristle brush can also help you apply lawn dressings, ensuring a healthy boost of nutrients when it needs it most in the following spring. It helps because the bristles work the top dressing into the turf, where it breaks down, quickly releasing nutrients into the soil.
You can use many substances for a top dressing, from your composted grass clippings to farmyard manure or regular lawn fertiliser. Whichever you decide to use, all you need to do after applying at the correct rate is brush it into your lawn on a dry day. You should brush the dressing until it has worked between the blades and isn’t covering and compacting the surface of the grass.
5. Disperse worm casts
Worm casts look like small mounds or clumps of soil on the surface of your lawn. They are not to be confused with the much larger molehill. Worm casts aren’t necessarily a bad sign for your lawn. In fact, they show that your lawn is healthy and full of worms, which are beneficial for fertility and drainage.
However, there’s no harm done dispersing worm casts, especially since they can be unsightly and can encourage areas for weeds to grow. All that’s needed to disperse them is to brush your bristle brush until the soil is dispersed and there’s no longer a mound. You can do this just before you mow your lawn or whenever suits you best.
