How your leaf blower can help you look after your garden

Get to know the jobs around the garden that are best dealt with using a cordless leaf blower.

How your leaf blower can help you look after your garden

Your cordless leaf blower is a versatile tool that can help maintain your garden throughout the year. From clearing grass clippings to unblocking gutters and downpipes, a leaf blower can simplify your garden maintenance. It can save you time and energy and help keep your garden thriving and healthy.

7 leaf blower gardening jobs

1. Tidying up after mowing your lawn

After mowing your lawn, you will find grass clippings in other places. You may well have intended the clippings to be strewn across the freshly cut grass to help fertilise it, however, some will have inevitably made their way to places they’re not meant to be, like pathways and decking.

You can choose to brush the grass clippings back onto the lawn. An easier alternative would be to use a cordless leaf blower like the EGO LB5800E leaf blower, which will blow the clippings effortlessly back onto your lawn.

2. Blowing away fallen leaves

You will probably get the most use out of your cordless leaf blower in autumn when most trees drop their needles and leaves. After blowing them into a pile, there are many benefits to fallen leaves along with keeping your garden tidy:

  • Shred them up and spread the leaves around the base of plants to suppress weeds.
  • Add them to the compost heap to give it a boost of carbon-rich matter.
  • Dig the leaves into your soil to promote biodiversity and encourage soil-improving organisms such as earthworms.
  • Compost them on their own and make leaf mould.

3. Clearing gutters and downpipes

Gutters and downpipes can become blocked by moss and other debris filling them. This can be a problem, especially when you have a water butt in your garden that’s vital for when the dry weather hits.

To remedy this, here’s how you can use a leaf blower to assist you in clearing your gutters:

  1. If the gutters are in a location that requires a ladder, make sure that it’s secured against a wall and stable.
  2. Attach the appropriate nozzle to your battery leaf blower and make sure it's secured tightly.
  3. Put the leaf blower into the gutter, turn it on and push it along the gutter as it’s blowing out the moss. You may need to use your hands to help the moss become unstuck.
  4. If you find the downpipe is blocked too, position the cordless blower and aim it into the top of the downpipe so it clears the blockage.
  5. Collect the moss that has been cleared and put it on the compost heap.

4. Drying your garden furniture

After cleaning your garden furniture, you may not want to wait for it to dry on its own. It may be a cool day, so this may take a while. Instead, you can use your leaf blower to dry them off so you can use your furniture sooner rather than later.

5. Freeing paths and driveways from moss

Moss will inevitably grow on many surfaces outside, such as paths and driveways. Making them look unsightly, you’ll be glad to know that they can be easily cleaned up using a battery leaf blower.

6. Clearing snow

When snow hits, your leaf blower can assist you in clearing it up. The blowing power of EGO’s leaf blowers means they are perfectly capable of blowing snow from your garden furniture and structures. You can even use it to blow snow off your fruit trees, as the buildup of snow can break the branches.

7. Distributing mulch

The lightweight and compact design of cordless leaf blowers, like the EGO LB7650E leaf blower, makes them the perfect tool for distributing mulch. Their ability to provide even coverage and reach tight spaces makes them great for distributing mulch around the base of plants.

Proper maintenance of your cordless leaf blower

Once you’ve used your leaf blower around the garden, it’s important to carry out some proper maintenance afterwards. We have a whole blog on how to maintain your cordless leaf blower; however, here are some simple guidelines you can follow:

  • Remove the battery - Remove the battery from your cordless leaf blower, wrap it in a towel or cloth and store it somewhere dry.
  • Clean the air filter - Check the air filter. If it's dirty, wash it with soapy water, let it dry, and fix it back in position. If it’s worn or damaged, replace it with the official EGO part from an approved stockist.
  • Check the blower tubes - Blocked tubes can reduce the performance, efficiency and run times of your leaf blower. To prevent this, ensure the blower tubes are clear of debris and secure.
  • Inspect and clean the air Intake - Check the air intake and clear it of leaves and debris to ensure proper airflow.
  • Tighten loose bolts and screws - Check and tighten any loose bolts, screws, or fasteners to prevent parts from coming loose when you next use your leaf blower.
  • Store properly - Store your leaf blower in a dry, sheltered area like a garden shed after maintenance.
  • Wipe down and clean the exterior - After use, wipe down the exterior and clean it so it's free of debris like grass clippings, dirt and leaves.
